History

Jordan – the country beyond the Jordan river – has not been a unified empire for centuries and has been a target for foreign armies and merchants since the time of the pharaohs. Apart from a short period in antiquity, the local population, largely made up of Bedouin tribes, was used to living under the rule of governors sent here by more powerful neighbors until the middle of the 20th century, when the independent Kingdom of Jordan was formed.

In the arid southern and eastern parts of the country, where there are no permanent rivers, only a small population of nomadic and semi-nomadic Bedouin tribes have survived. And so the history of Jordan revolves largely around the history of the fertile north and west.

Tens of thousands of years ago, the climate of the area was more favorable, so the oldest history speaks of a relatively rich settlement of pastoralists and farmers. From the 3rd millennium, the most important ancient empires – Egypt and Mesopotamia – began to emerge on the territory of the so-called fertile crescent. Important trade routes run through Jordan and the country has alternately come under the influence of stronger neighbors over the centuries.

The history of Jordan is marked by the commercially gifted Nabataeans, who around the turn of the century will create a prosperous Nabataean kingdom. The rapid rise of Islam in the 7th century is becoming a turning point in history, with Damascus serving for some time as the cultural center of the Islamic world. Between the 11th and 19th centuries, the Crusaders, the Mamluks and the Ottomans took turns here.

In the 19th century, European influence was gaining ground – especially British and French. The interwar development led to the gradual independence and establishment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 1946. The most prominent figure in the country’s modern history is King Hussein, who died in 1999. The latest development of Jordan is associated with the person of Hussein’s son King Abdullah.

Royal Family of Hashemit kingdom

The term “Hashemit” is derived from Hashim,Qusai’s grandson and great-grandfather Muhammad’s. So the Jordanian Hashemites are direct descendants of the Prophet. The reigning ruler, His Majesty the King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussain, you his family are among the people very popular and loved very much. His Majesty transformed the kingdom under mighty Efforts to maintain a sustainable level of Economic growth and social development, aimed at improving the standard of living for everyone Jordanians aims to ensure.King Abdullah II bin al-Hussein was born on January 30th 1962 in Amman, is His Majesty’s eldest son, des late King Hussain, and from Princess Munaal-Hussein. He received his school education in the Islamic Education School in Amman, later attended he attended St. Edmund’s School in Surrey, England. He also attended Eaglebrook School and the Deerfield Academy in the United States. Her Majesty Queen Rania advocates tolerance to practice and between people of all cultures Build bridges. She fights for women’s rights and also pushed a number of them in the field of education of projects. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Queens of the world as same as the fashion icon.

Safety and habits

Jordan is a safe country, with general crime at a very low level. All tourist attractions are completely safe. We only recommend avoiding the areas near the borders with Syria and Iraq, where there are still no tourist attractions. For security checks, there are many military checkpoints in the country that check the identity of passengers. For this reason, it is necessary to carry a passport with you at all times.

Driving in Jordan is a chapter in itself. Jordanians don’t bother to follow the rules too much and drive according to intuition rather than rules. Once you get used to this method, you will find that it is not as terrible as at first glance. Pay particular attention to unmarked asphalt retarders that blend in with the surroundings. After dark, many poorly lit vehicles drive.

Jordanians have a very tolerant approach to foreigners and religions, yet it cannot be overlooked that it is a Muslim country. Especially in rural areas, we recommend avoiding eccentric clothing and alcohol consumption in public (alcohol is sold in specialized stores and is also available in selected restaurants and bars). Women do not have to wear the hijab and, especially in larger cities, often dress in a European way. It is necessary to take into account that the locals have a lot of time for everything and adjust their normal rhythm to it – you are on vacation.

Landscape and nature

The 400 km long and 10 km wide tectonic Jordan trench divides Jordan lying in the northwest of the Arabian Peninsula into a western part with a 600 to 1200 m high hill and into an eastern part with mountains rising steeply to a height of 1745 m above sea level. and gradually leading to the Arabian desert. The Jordan River flows through the ditch depression, which is not navigable due to numerous bays, and flows into the Dead Sea, which is the lowest exposed place on earth and lies 400 meters below the surface of the world’s oceans. Thanks to the narrow runway in the Gulf of Aqaba, Jordan has a connection to the Red Sea.

Despite its small size in Jordan, you will find various types of landscapes from deserts and semi-deserts in the east, through typically Mediterranean vegetation mostly in the north to the fertile belt of the Jordan Valley, and finally, the desert in southern Jordan in the Arabian Valley forming the border with Israel.

The most interesting natural phenomena for tourists are the numerous rock canyons and gorges called Wadi, which stretch from the highlands to the valley of the moat. The most beautiful canyon in Wadi Mujib with a flowing wild river and waterfalls, where canyoning takes place. There are many other nature reserves in Jordan.

Most of the country is dominated by a desert climate with hot summers and cold winters and light rainfall. In the west, there is a Mediterranean climate, which also allows agricultural use of the landscape. The best time to visit Jordan is spring from February to May and autumn from September to November
